A recap of 2018-2019

The purpose of this association shall be to promote basketball in the state of Arkansas through the junior high, senior high schools and colleges, and to emphasize the importance of coaches serving as role models and mentors for the youngsters under their supervision.

MEMBERSHIP: BCAM breaks membership record for the 7th consecutive year to 5845 members for the 2018-19. We continue to lead the country as the largest basketball coaches association

Promoting Maine Basketball

This is the motto of the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches. Each year the MABC is looking for new ways to promote the state’s most popular sport. The MABC is comprised of coaches from all areas of the state, from all classifications and levels - both male and female. The MABC currently promotes Maine basketball on its website; mabc1.org. The activities currently being sponsored by MABC are:

The NMHSCA has reconstructed its All-Star Basketball Format in 2019. The NMHSCA first hosted North vs. South all-star games in 1946. Most recently, a north and south team would be chosen in classes 1A/2A, 3A/4A, & 5A/6A for a total of six girls’ teams and six boys’ teams. Each team would play one game against the corresponding classification. Starting in the summer of 2019, the NMHSCA divided the state into four regions. Within each region, schools were determined to be either large school or small school based on whether the school’s enrollment was in the upper half or lower half of all schools’ enrollment. The new format has two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams for a total of four teams from each of the four regions. The first night of All-Star competition has regional teams playing a second region’s team. The second night of All-Star competition, the winning regional teams play and the losing regional teams play. The NMHSCA All-Star hosts sixteen all-star teams and sixteen all-star basketball games. One-hundred and ninety-two athletes and forty-eight coaches participate in New Mexico’s North vs. South All-Star platform. This is going to be a New Mexico tradition.

The MBCA Mission has always been to “promote basketball throughout the State of Missouri.” We are doing this with over 1,400 members who are provided professional liability insurance through the MBCA, along with accolades for coaches, players and events. We also provide team rankings for all classifications (both girls and boys) weekly throughout the basketball season; we are the only organization in the state that provides this service.

The NHBCO has had an interesting year. After returning from the Raleigh, NC NHSBCA Convention, we got to work to putting together the largest coach’s clinic in the history of New Hampshire. We had coaches from all over New England attend the clinic and everyone got to see some great speakers headlined by Kurt Miller the Head Coach of the WNBA Connecticut Suns. Joining Coach Miller this year was Maureen Magarity from UNH, Paul Culpo from Castleton University, Charlie Mason from New England College, and Pat Quinn from NX Generation Athletics. The coaches in attendance really felt like this was an outstanding day of networking and gathering new ideas. One of the biggest reasons for improved attendance was the decision to move the clinic to the state capital Concord, NH. The central location was a hit.

The Tennessee Basketball Coaches Association currently has several things going on as this busy 2018-19 school year picks up steam. We continue to enjoy our sponsorship agreements with Baron Rings, PGC Basketball, and Dr. Dish – very excited about these solid relationships that continue to improve the “quality” of resource/opportunities for our membership. Our partnership with Dr. Dish allows us to give away a Dr. Dish All-Star shooting machine to a BCAT member each year! Also, we have started to offer $500 scholarships to children, players, and managers of our member coaches. Plans to create a Tennessee Basketball “Hall of Fame” remains in progress, and we are continuing to send out weekly playbooks/notebooks to our coaches as we continue to look for ways to increase the value of our association for the Tennessee high school basketball community. We have also expanded our All-Star games – have 4 teams from around the state and play 2 games with each team. Finally, we maintain our solid relationship with the NHSBCA (National High School Basketball Coaches Association), relying on their support and expertise as our country moves into a new era of scholastic basketball.

The recent calendar year was a banner one for WIBCA and its member coaches and studentathletes. WIBCA, the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association was founded in 1974 and is the exclusive association of high school boys’ basketball coaches across the state of Washington. We are a non-profit organization and operate under the umbrella of the Washington State Coaches Association. Annually, the number of events, activities, and awards that WIBCA hosts, promotes and sponsors continues to get larger and larger, all in the name of providing services and benefits to our membership of coaches and their student-athletes. Some of 2017-2018’s highlights include record all-time membership, our six All-State games, Showcase event and our annual Hall of Fame inductions. We are in our second year at the All State games of not charging any of our 60 participants a fee to play in the games. Our sixteenth annual Showcase event in May brought 60 of the best high school basketball players in the state to Bellevue College for two days where they showcased their basketball talents while also gaining life skills along the way. College coaches from the Pacific Northwest came to watch and evaluate these players. Also at this year’s Showcase, WIBCA again promoted our Dribble, Shoot, Swish event that gave young people the opportunity to win money but more importantly to increase those funds by making an initial charitable donation on their behalf with their initial winnings. The Hall of Fame inductions held in Mountlake Terrace had a fantastic turnout and recognized three long-time head coaches from the high school and collegiate level, one assistant coach and two individuals each for their service and dedication to the sport of boys’ basketball in our great state. In July, WIBCA sent a group of four board members to the National High School Basketball Coaches Association meetings in Raleigh, North Carolina. For the past nine years, WIBCA has seen their membership in this association increase. Our role as a leading state association nationally continues to be significant while also being an association that is very well represented at these meetings. WIBCA provided two outstanding clinics this year, one in the fall in Yakima and one in the spring in Chelan for coaches to increase their professional development learning from outstanding coaches and basketball-related individuals while also having opportunity for coaching collaboration and networking. Our coaches across the state again stepped up and promoted our WIBCA vs. Cancer week at the end of January. Our donation total from a variety of events during the week continues to grow and grow as we near the $700,000 mark. Donations are made to local cancer charities in each high school programs community. The association, with the support of our members and in collaboration with the NHSBCA, made significant contributions to charities in Florida and Texas on behalf of their state basketball coaches association to assist those impacted by the Hurricanes Harvey and Katrina. WIBCA saw record sponsorship dollars come in this past year and because of this we were able to continue offering two $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors. As we look forward to the future, 2018-2019 will be one of the busiest ever for our association. The recent changes that have been implemented by the NCAA for their Division 1 recruiting calendar now allows WIBCA to host and produce two first class events next June for our student-athletes to be showcased and evaluated. WIBCA is very proud of what we do for coaches and student-athletes and is humbled by the participation and support for our association by so many individuals. Over the past 45 years now WIBCA has grown and grown into the proud and great association we are today and following up next year with another outstanding one we will be even stronger one in the future.

The Florida Basketball Coaches Association was started in Orlando at a meeting of Central Florida head coaches / organized by Coach Ed Kershner in the Fall of 2009

The IBCA is excited for the start of the 2018-19 school year. We have had a lot going on in our great state of Illinois - with the IBCA in particular. Last year, the IBCA began the “Century Club” recognition for our coaches. Another initiative that we began was the Program Victories Milestones. Twenty-one programs throughout the state were recognized for total program wins throughout their school’s history. We also recognized “Organizations of the Year”. The inaugural winners of this award were the Centralia Holiday Tournament, the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, and the DeKalb/Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic. It is so important to the IBCA to continue to recognize and highlight our great coaches, programs, and organizations throughout our state every year! More information can be found on our website.

Good things are happening in Iowa with the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) -

Maine McDonald’s All-Star Weekend continues to be the focal point of the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches. This showcase event has grown steadily throughout the years and now includes all-star team practices, a formal awards banquet, and all-star games. Students athletes are recognized for their prowess on the court and in the classroom. Coaches of the year are recognized as well. In recent years, the MABC has established a new award entitled The Spirit of the Game. The award recognized players who have overcome substantial obstacles in their pursuit of their basketball dream. In 2009, CBS Sports feature this award presentation as part of their pre-game show for the men’s final four in Michigan. Jason McElwain, of ESPN fame, was on hand to make the presentations. The award has gone on to become a truly inspirational moment of each year’s banquet.

Established in January 2016, the Maryland Basketball Coaches Association is led by a group of local coaches from various counties throughout the state – John Brown, Linda Caccavalla, Heather Dewees, Barry Green, Arnie McGaha, Mike Mohler, Casey Rudzinski, Rob Slopek, Kathleen Stoudt and Teresa Waters. Our primary goal remains, to provide quality service to players and coaches throughout the state.

The KABC was formed in 1993 after several meetings of coaches representing various regions of the state. The meetings took place in Lexington, Kentucky, at the KHSAA offices. The purpose of these meetings was to develop a basketball coaches' association that would protect and promote the game and its tradition-rich legacy.

The MBCA Mission is and has been from the beginning to “Promote Basketball Throughout the State of Missouri.” We are doing this with over 1,500 members that are provided professional liability insurance through the MBCA along with the accolades for coaches, players and events. We also provide team rankings for all classifications both girls and boys weekly throughout the basketball season; we are the only organization in the state that provides this service.

The NHBCO continues to make a commitment to grow as an organization. The past three years the organization’s officers have traveled to the NHSBCA National Conventions in Las Vegas, Kansas City, and to Indianapolis in 2017. Many great ideas have come out of these trips.

BCANY was formed in 1982 and is led by a Board of Directors which is comprised of volunteer Directors for boy’s coaches and for girls’ coaches from each of the 11 sections of NYSPHSAA as well as from NYS Catholic, NYC Public and NYS Private Schools. We refer to each of these 14 subdivisions as Chapters. (Also there are Directors representing men’s coaches and women’s coaches at the JUCO, Division II/III and Division I levels.)

MEMBERSHIP: BCAM is happy to announce that we increased our membership to over 5700 members. We continue to lead the country as the largest basketball coaches association.

2016-17 was another record year for the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association. Thanks to ideas we incorporated (borrowed from other states) from our participation in the 2016 NHSBCA meetings, our year end membership grew again, to over 750 coaches. We also gave out more awards and honors to our players and coaches than ever before. Our 2017-18 membership has already surpassed 800 members for this year and we usually have a large rush to sign up in early February, just before we start accepting our All District nominations

March 2018 will mark the 71st year that the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association has been in existence.

The PABCA (Pennsylvania Basketball Coaches Association) was launched January 1, 2016 and after almost two years of operation we have over 200 members. Pennsylvania was one of the few states in the country that never had a basketball coaches association. With many successful basketball players and coaches from Pennsylvania, Glenn Anderson decided to create the first Pennsylvania Basketball Coaches Association. The people of Pennsylvania are proud of its rich basketball tradition that includes Wilt Chamberlain, Chuck Cooper, Maurice Stokes and Kobe Bryant, not to mention George Karl and John Calipari. We offered a FREE Coaches Clinic in April (Keynote Speaker John Miller –father of Sean and Archie Miller). Our youth clinic was offered in June and provided quality instruction by USA Basketball coaches for boys and girls 10-14 years of age. Our first Coaches Clinic was September 23rd and featured Andy Toole (RMU), Keith Dambrot (Duquesne University) and the legendary John Calipari (Kentucky). Over 100 high school and youth coaches attended the clinic and enjoyed listening to our knowledgeable speakers. We truly appreciate all of the help and support the NHSBCA (National High School Basketball Coaches Association) has provided and we will continue to rely on their expertise as our association grows. The Tennessee Basketball Coaches Association currently has several things going on as this busy 2017 winds down. We have signed sponsorship agreements with Baron Rings, PGC Basketball, and Dr. Dish – very excited about these new relationships that will improve the “quality” of resource/opportunities for our membership. Also, we have started a scholarship program for our membership’s children and their players. Also, plans are in the works to create a Tennessee Basketball “ Hall of Fame,” which will require a great deal of work and dedication. Our clinic was outstanding this past Fall, and we are pushing hard to build up our membership. We are sending out weekly playbooks/notebooks to our coaches, and continue to look for ways to increase the value of our association for the Tennessee high school basketball community. Our participation in the NHSBCA Convention last July in Indianapolis continued to upgrade our opportunities, and we look forward uncovering new “gems” at this year’s event in North Carolina!

The recent school calendar year was again another successful one for WIBCA and its member coaches and student-athletes. First, a little background of WIBCA. We were founded in 1974, WIBCA, Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association, is the main association of high school boys’ basketball coaches from across the state of Washington. We are a non-profit organization and are under the umbrella of the Washington State Coaches Association. Year-round the number of events, activities, and awards that WIBCA sponsors continues to grow and grow, all in the name of providing services and benefits to our member coaches and their student-athletes. Some of the past years highlights include our six All State Games, Northwest Shootout Game and our annual Hall of Fame inductions. For the first time in our history at our All State games, we did not charge any of our 60 participants a fee to play in the games. Our Northwest Shootout team was successfully put together with 10 of the top Washington seniors but lost a heartbreaking close game. This year’s hall of fame inductions recognized three head coaches, one assistant coach and three individuals each for their service and dedication to the sport of boys’ basketball in the great state of Washington including our new Pat Fitterer “You Gotta Love it” award. In July, WIBCA sent a group of four board members to the National High School Basketball Coaches Association meetings in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the past eight years WIBCA has seen their membership in this association grow and also their role as a leading state association nationally. WIBCA provided two quality clinics this year, one in the fall and one in the spring for coaches to increase their professional development while also having great opportunity for coaching collaboration and collegial time. Our coaches across the state again stepped up and promoted our WIBCA vs. Cancer week at the end of January. Our donation total continues to grow and grow and we are moving close to the $700,000 mark! WIBCA saw record sponsorship and because of this was able to continue offering two $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors. Our spring saw again the 16th Annual Showcase for 160 basketball players in our state. College coaches from the Pacific Northwest came to watch and evaluate these players. Also at this year’s Showcase, WIBCA again promoted our Dribble, Shoot, Swish event that gave young people the opportunity to win money but more importantly to increase that by making a charitable donation on their behalf with their initial winnings. WIBCA is very proud of what we do for coaches and humbled by the participation and support for our association. Over the past 44 years WIBCA has grown and grown into the great association we are today and with another great year next year an even better one in the future.
