A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT NALIN SOOD

As we move into the spring and many of us have finished or are currently finishing our seasons, I hope that each of you has the chance to look back and see the positives and rewards of what each and every single one of you do in your role working with student-athletes. For each of us our seasons are unique and different. I learned a long time ago from a very successful high school coach “even when it appears to be the perfect season, it is at times just a different set of issues.” That being said, even the years when the “L’s” outweigh the “W’s” there are many things that we can look back on and be appreciative of and grateful for. I truly hope each of you, in your own way, can reflect and feel positive about what you do because without your tireless efforts co-curricular activities like high school basketball could not take place and not be the best sport ever! The NHSBCA is working hard and planning for our summer convention in Indianapolis on July 13th-15th. We will be doing our best to inform you with all the information you need to make plans to attend through upcoming newsletters and also our website (www.nhsbca.org). Again, congratulations on your seasons!

Senior Director of Operations and NABC Board Member - Dave Archer – New York

Dave Archer sent out Suggestions for Scholastic Basketball Coach + School District Evaluation Process to all state leaders. At Greg Grantham’s suggestion, this document as well as the preceding Fair Treatment of Basketball Coaches document will be shared with all state directors of basketball, with the directors of different sports in each state, and their associations. The belief is that we all have more “power” when more people on the different association boards see this material.

The state of Washington, as well as many other states, has already shared many of these Fair Treatment” documents with state reps and are starting to share them with reps of other sports as well. These documents have been well received by not only basketball people, but also reps of other sports as well.

Coach Archer and Coach Grantham also collaborated on a column that will soon appear in the upcoming NABC quarterly magazine. The article, Scholastic Coaches Have a Comprehensive Role With Players discusses the many roles scholastic coaches have. Additionally Archer and Grantham will design and administer a survey in regard to challenges and rewards of scholastic coaching. Dave Archer feels we can then “brainstorm” at our Indy meetings in July to come up with new and better ways to improve the environment for scholastic coaches.

Secretary/Treasurer - Dave Ginsberg – Michigan

Dave Ginsberg shared the status of dues paying states. Many states are up-to-date on paying dues; other states will be receiving invoices soon on dues owed. The NHSBCA will have some expenses coming up with Final Four items to giveaways (pens, mugs, etc.). He also shared the Points of Pride section of the on nhsbca.org – this section is going very well. New Hampshire is the latest to share the happenings in their state on the website.

2017 NHSBCA Summer Convention – Steve Witty - NHSBCA Exec. Board Member– Indiana:

Steve Witty indicates that everything is good for the July meetings in Indiana. He has been working closely with the Ben Davis High School Tech Dept. The Tech. Dept. will be using video and recording “snippets” to use at a later times (Final Fours in the booths, NHSBCA website, etc.) The link for Reservations will be up soon. The link will be on NHSBCA website - nhsbca.org. Once posted on the website, Dave Ginsberg will send out a personalized note to our membership with an explanation for the July Convention in Indy.

Dave Ginsberg is working on the booklets for Indianapolis and is looking for ways to add to them. Dave Archer and the entire executive board will be working on the agenda for the Indy meetings in upcoming conference calls. This will include the booking of speakers and overall planning of the event. Details on all of this will be included in future newsletters. Dave Archer and Greg Grantham will possibly be sending Google Surveys out to gather info on the Indy meetings

WBCA Information – Nalin Sood & Renee Turpa – NHSBCA Exec. Board Member – Indiana

Rick Sherley and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches is helping Renee and the WBCA with the Women’s’ Final Four preparations. Danielle Donehew – executive director of the WBCA wants to come to our summer meetings in Indianapolis. The NHSBCA Executive Board will plan ways to better align our organization with the WBCA. Nalin Sood and Dave Archer will continue to communicate with Danielle over the coming months on this alignment and the Indy meetings.

Final Four Business - Greg Grantham – NHSBCA Exec. Board Member – North Carolina

Greg Grantham has reserved a booth with the NABC for the Final Four in Phoenix. He, Rich Czeslawski, and others will operate the booth at the NABC Convention. Rich Czeslawski, Don Showalter, and Dave Archer are working on a place for the NHSBCA social event at the Final Four, clinic speakers, and other details in Phoenix. More information on the Final Four will be included in the March newsletter.

Nalin Sood – NHSBCA President - Washington –

Nalin Sood has been working with Scorebook Live. The media coverage in the state of Washington (like prep coverage in most states) is lacking. Media outlets have begun to use the reports generated by Scorebook Live to write their stories. Tom Barrack of Ohio states that he has used the app all season and the media in his region loves it. For him as a coach it has also cut down on the amount of time he has to take in communicating with the media. They have all of the info – they just need a quote now. This may prove to be a great way for schools and states to get information to media outlets. The recommendation from Nalin (and others) to Scorebook Live is to contact the AD’s and state leaders about backing Scorebook Live. Greg Grantham believes that this will be a subject of discussion at the NFHS meeting he will attend since it was a question on the recent NFHS questionnaire. Many states are requiring paper scorebooks to still be used in basketball contests. Indiana is using Scorebook Live at each of its 16 Regional sites during the playoffs this Spring. Costs of the operation of Scorebook Live continue to be a drawback; furthering the need for the AD’s to endorse the use of this product. In Washington, Scorebook Live will be used at the State tourney.

AAU Business - Nalin Sood – NHSBCA President - Washington

AAU representative Pat Fitterer of Washington will be joining us in July in Indianapolis. He will be sharing ideas on where the AAU is headed and how he thinks the NHSBCA and AAU may align with each other. Pat is also a high school coach in Washington state and has attended past NHSBCA conventions.

Next NHSBCA Executive Board Conference Call – March 20th, 2017 / 8 pm (Eastern) Note: The Executive Board of the NHSBCA conducts regular monthly conference calls to discuss association matters as they relate to the betterment of this association and its members nationally.
